Christina est née le 18 décembre 1980 à Staten Island, tout près de New York. Son père est un militaire qui prend le domicile familial pour un terrain de combat où il fait régner la terreur. Sa mère est pianiste et violoniste. La fillette, victime de la brutalité de son père, se réfugie dans la musique pour oublier l'atmosphère insupportable de la maison familiale.

Christina participe à l'âge de 8 ans à l'émission Star Search. Elle ne remporte pas le concours et éclate en pleurs dans les coulisses. Deux ans plus tard, elle chante l'hymne national américain pour les équipes sportives de Pittsburgh.

A 12 ans, Christina participe au Mickey mouse club où elle côtoie d'autres jeunes gens qui deviendront des stars par la suite. En effet, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake (futur membre des N'Sync et futur fiancé de Britney) ou encore Keri Russell font partie de cette émission consacrée aux enfants. Christina y restera pendant deux ans.

Elle enregistre ensuite un duo avec une vedette japonaise, Keizo Nakanishi, et fait une tournée au Japon. En 1998, Christina fabrique elle-même une démo de fortune en enregistrant le titre de Whitney Houston, I wanna run to you, et en envoie une copie à ses anciens employeurs, les studios de Disney. Au mois d'août, elle part en tournée.
